Why it matters

Serum copper measures what's circulating, most of it bound to caeruloplasmin and influenced by inflammation. Measuring inside red cells is intended to describe the cellular picture instead.

Practitioners who use red cell mineral testing consider it a better reflection of tissue status; that view isn't universal.
