Why it matters

Prolactin is released by the pituitary gland. It's best known for its role in lactation but is present in everyone.

Before you collect

Prolactin rises with stress, sleep, exercise, meals and breast stimulation. Morning collection after resting quietly for 20–30 minutes is standard — a rushed or stressful collection can raise the result independently of anything else. Several medications also affect it.
