What this test measures

Shotgun metagenomic sequencing, which reads the genetic material of everything in the sample rather than looking for a predetermined panel of organisms. Reports microbial composition and diversity at species level.

Why these markers matter

Targeted PCR asks "is this organism here?" for each item on a list. Metagenomics asks "what is here?" and reads the answer. The trade-off is breadth against certainty — you see more, including things a targeted panel would never think to look for. Diversity itself is part of the picture. A microbiome's richness and balance describe something a list of individual organisms doesn't.

What you get

Before you collect

Stop antibiotics and antifungals two weeks beforehand, probiotics three days beforehand, unless advised otherwise. Refrigerate and post back the same day.
