Why it matters

Magnesium is involved in hundreds of enzyme reactions, muscle and nerve function, and bone structure.

A significant limitation worth knowing: only a small fraction of body magnesium is in the blood, and the body holds serum levels steady by drawing on stores. Serum magnesium can therefore sit in range while stores are lower. It's a useful test with a known blind spot.
