A challenge test: you take a measured iodine dose, then collect urine over 24 hours to measure how much is excreted.
What this test measures
Iodine excreted in urine over 24 hours following a standardised oral iodine dose.
Why these markers matter
A spot iodine measurement tells you what's in the urine at that moment. A loading test asks a different question: given a known dose, how much does the body hold on to and how much does it let go? The reasoning is that a body with lower iodine stores retains more of a dose. It's an indirect measure and its interpretation is debated, which is worth knowing before ordering.
What you get
Kit posted to you with the iodine dose, collection container and instructions. Results in your private dashboard, typically one to two weeks after collection.
Before you collect
This involves taking an iodine dose and collecting all urine for 24 hours afterwards. Do not start without speaking to your practitioner — iodine loading is not appropriate for everyone, particularly where thyroid conditions are present.
Who this suits
People whose practitioner has specifically recommended a loading test.
