Why it matters

Like creatinine, cystatin C is used to describe kidney filtration. Unlike creatinine, it isn't meaningfully affected by muscle mass.

That makes it useful where creatinine-based estimates are unreliable — in people with high or low muscle mass, or where the two measures disagree.
