Why it matters

The counterpart to the 8am test. By late afternoon cortisol has normally fallen considerably from its morning peak, and measuring at this point describes a different part of the curve.

Ordered together, the two describe the fall across the day.

Before you collect

Collect at 4pm. Same caveats as the morning test — shift work, illness and corticosteroids affect results.
