Measures
CRP, a protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation.
Why it matters
CRP rises when there's an inflammatory process somewhere in the body and falls as it resolves. It's a general marker — it indicates that something is happening, not what or where.
Standard CRP is used where a meaningful inflammatory response is in question. For the lower-level measurements used in other contexts, hs-CRP is the more sensitive test.
Before you collect
Recent illness, injury or intense exercise raises CRP. Collect when you're otherwise well unless testing during an episode is the point.
Suits
People monitoring inflammation with a practitioner.
Your next step
