Measures
Apolipoprotein A1, apolipoprotein B, and the ratio between them.
Why it matters
Cholesterol travels in particles, and apolipoproteins are the structural proteins on those particles. ApoA1 is found on HDL particles; ApoB on LDL and related particles.
Because each particle carries one ApoB molecule, measuring ApoB counts particles rather than the cholesterol inside them. Two people with the same LDL cholesterol can carry different particle numbers, and some practitioners consider the count the more informative figure.
Before you collect
A 10–12 hour fast is standard.
Suits
People tracking lipids in more detail than a standard panel provides.
