Why it matters

Albumin is made by the liver. It maintains fluid balance between blood and tissues, and carries hormones, medications and other substances around the body.

Because the liver produces it, albumin reflects liver synthetic function. Because it's a protein, it also reflects nutritional status and hydration. Those three inputs mean it's rarely interpreted on its own.
