This is not the standard vitamin D test. Routine testing measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the storage form, which is what describes vitamin D status. The 1,25 form is tightly regulated by the body and can sit in the normal range even when stores are low.

It's ordered in specific clinical circumstances, usually relating to calcium handling, rather than to assess whether someone has enough vitamin D.
